About Aida
Aïda is a white settler emigrant of a postwar refugee family from Latvia.
Educated in graphic design at the Kootenay School of Art, B.C. and in fine arts at Queen’s University, ON, Šulcs cut her teeth in freelance illustration, later developing as a multi-disciplinary artist-in-education while exhibiting, performing and publishing regionally.
Her art practice is both a catharsis and a tool of self-discovery. Points of interest in her work include how humans treat one another, our relationship with the land, and the effects of war culture – migration, displacement, poverty and mental illness.
A visit to Aida’s studio
Lindsay first saw Child when she was visiting Aida for tea, and it was hanging in her living room, which she also uses as her studio.
“I don’t know if I was hypnotized by the scale of the work, the layers upon layers of pencil markings or the expression on the child’s face. I just couldn’t look away.”
